Known by fans as The Muscles from Brussels, Jean-Claude van Damme recently showed the world his strength of character by raising funds to help our four-legged friends in need.

A long time animal activist who has rescued many dogs from the streets, the action star attended an event in Sydney for Animals Australia, and presented a donation of $30,000 to the paws cause which was raised thanks to auctions held at “An Evening with Jean-Claude van Damme- Unplugged & Unscripted” events that took place in both Sydney and Melbourne.

During his stay in The Land Down Under, JCVD also paid a visit to the animal protection organization, where he had the opportunity to meet a rescued racing greyhound named Blue.

Since its start in 1980, Animals Australia has investigated cruelty toward all creatures great and small around the globe, and educates the public on the plight of innocent souls who cannot speak for themselves. In 2015 alone Animals Australia shone a light on the plight of animals caught up in the horrors of factory farming, live export, puppy mills, and dog racing.

A joint investigation by Animals Australia and Animal Liberation Qld played a part in a historic bill to end greyhound racing in NSW which has just been passed in New South Wales' Parliament.

The following infographic shows the beneficial impact that New South Wales's greyhound racing ban will have not only on the lives of dogs who were forced into the racing industry, but also the many animals who were found to be used as live bait:
