What to do if your dog is sprayed by a skunk!

skunk

de-skunking-border

Living in the country, skunks are a fact of life for us. We rarely see them, although I know they live on the hill and in the gullies on the back part of our property. This spring, I was walking Irie and Tiki and we surprised a skunk, who left us a smelly reminder of his presence. I was very glad that both dogs were on leash and didn't run up on the skunk and get sprayed.

If your dog does get sprayed by a skunk, we have some good advice in this guest post from the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University.

The awful smell caused by a skunk spray is no joke. Dog owners know to keep their dog away from skunks at all costs-but sometimes Fido has other plans. With warmer weather approaching, skunks are becoming more active at dawn and dusk. Are you prepared for a potential skunk spray?

Skunks are omnivores, meaning they eat both vegetation and meat, and they are a part of the weasel family. They are more active in the warmer months, specifically in early morning and dusk and are generally non-aggressive animals. Although skunks typically prefer flight over fight, they are capable of spraying a substance degraded from their urine when they feel threatened. This foul-smelling spray can reach up to 16 feet.

If you find your dog sprayed by a skunk, it is important to act fast. The longer the spray sits on your dog's coat, the worse the odor becomes and the harder it is to wash out. First, situate your smelly pooch outside to prevent any of the substance from soaking your carpet or furniture. Next, change into old clothes you won't mind throwing away after bathing your dog. Be sure to grab some disposable gloves, too!

Although there are specific skunk spray shampoos available on the market, we rarely have such shampoos available on-hand at home when we need them. In this case, Dr. James Barr, clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offered another solution.

“Although there are no specific therapies that work all of the time, the Humane Society of the United States recommends using a one quart mixture of three percent hydrogen peroxide, one-fourth cup baking soda, and one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap to help get the smell off the dog,” he said. Dog owners should be careful not to add any more than the recommended amount of hydrogen peroxide, as this could burn the dog's skin. It is also recommended to use fresh baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to ensure effectiveness. In addition, the solution must be mixed in an open container to avoid an explosion caused by a chemical reaction.

But, before you begin bathing your dog, be sure to check if the skunk took a harmful bite into your pooch. In this case, you should take your dog to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. “Dog owners need to ensure that the skunk did not bite the pet,” Barr said. “Skunks are notorious carriers of rabies, and any possible interaction with a skunk resulting in broken skin warrants quarantine.”

In addition, dog owners should check to see if the dog was sprayed in the face before bathing. “Getting sprayed in the face usually does not cause many problems, but it can if enough skunk spray gets sprayed onto the pet,” Barr said. “It can cause significant irritation to the eyes, and in rare cases, severe anemia, and of course an offensive odor.”

If your dog was sprayed in the face, it is important to avoid getting the bathing mixture in their eyes, mouth, and nose. It may be necessary to wash, rinse, and repeat several times until the smell is gone. Your pooch may regret taunting the furry black and white creature they found, but how can you be sure to avoid this situation again?

The easiest way to avoid a skunk spray is to locate areas in your yard skunks are likely to hide and fix these areas so they are no longer attractive to skunks. According to the United States Humane Society, these areas include wood and rock piles, elevated sheds, openings under concrete slabs and porches, and access to crawl spaces under houses. Skunks are also attracted to garbage and pet food left out at night. For more information on how to prevent skunk habitats in your yard, click here.

Skunks may be known for their terrible smelling spray, but these animals are easy-going in nature. Since skunks only spray when they feel threatened, it is important to keep your dog away from areas where skunks may be hiding. In addition, home-owners can decrease the likelihood of a skunk in their yard by referring to the United States Humane Society.

Shelter Wednesday: July 27

dog-625877_640-3

dog-625877_640-3

As we get ready to say goodbye to the month of July, homeless dogs across the country are hoping that they will soon get to say so long to life in a shelter.

Each year approximately 3.9 million dogs find themselves in the U.S. shelter system. One way to help adoptable animals find loving homes is by sharing their shelter photos via social media. Following are a few of the dogs we've showcased on Twitter this past week. For a look at more adorable adoptables in shelters from coast to coast as well as the latest news of animal-loving luminaries who help paws causes, follow us on Twitter at @HollywoodDogs.

Let's Look at the #PawZaarParty Prizes!

prize6

pawzaarparty-prizes

Just a few more days until Friday's #PawZaarParty Twitter party! Today I wanted to look at the great prizes we'll be giving away every 10 minutes, starting with the pre-party prize (for which you don't need to be present to win!)

As you can see, we've got a LOT of prizes to give away! Each time slot will include multiple prizes - and, to enter, all you have to do is participate in the party! Tweet, retweet, share photos, and answer Q1, Q2 type questions and you're entered!

To enter the pre-party giveaway, be sure to visit the RSVP post either here or on CatTipper.

How to Join a Twitter Party

If you've never joined in a Twitter party or if you need a little refresher, here's some basic info so you can join the fun (and enter to win prizes!)

What will you be giving away?

The party kicks off with the winner announcement of our pre-party prize (you don't have to be present to win that prize). After that pre-party prize, we'll be giving away multi-prize packs every 10 minutes of some of our new and favorite PawZaar products, culminating in a $100 gift card giveaway at the end of the party!

How do I join the party?

The party takes place on Twitter. It's very tough to follow along a fast-moving Twitter party by using Twitter.com, though, so we suggest visiting our private party room on Tweet Chat. Go to http://www.tweetchat.com/room/pawzaarparty to see all the party talk!

Which Twitter account should I watch?

Four members of our team will be participating in the party on these accounts:

@dogtipper: asking Q1, Q2 type questions and announcing winners

@HollywoodDogs: sharing adoptable pet photos

@CatTipper: announcing prizes

@PawZaar: sharing facts about our store, donations, the fundraising program and facts about prizes

If you just watch one stream, though, you'll miss parts of the party so we recommend seeing the whole party on the TweetChat page.

How do I participate?

To participate, just tweet–share a photo, answer a question, retweet someone else's Tweet, etc. Just be sure that #PawZaarParty is included in all your tweets (otherwise it won't be part of the party).

How do I win?

To win, just participate! Winners are picked at random from among people participating.

I don't live in the US. Can I participate?

Definitely; our PawZaar store ships worldwide!

How do I get my prize?

Watch for a DM from @dogtipper AFTER the party for information on privately sharing your mailing address. Be sure you are following @dogtipper on Twitter or Twitter won't allow us to DM you.

#PawPromise Adoptable Dog of the Week: Dottie

Screen Shot 2016-07-24 at 1.03.44 PM

Screen Shot 2016-07-24 at 1.03.44 PM

Hi! My name is Dottie, and I'm psyched for the sight of athletes from around the world gathering for the 2016 Olympic summer games in Rio. I'm “going for the gold,” too– I'm trying to win a pet parent's heart of gold!

Not to brag or anything, but I'm a bit of an athlete myself. You should see me run when I chase after a ball during a game of fetch– I'm Florence Griffith Joyner, Allyson Felix and Lolo Jones, all rolled into one! (Okay, maybe I exaggerate a little bit, but I do love to play!) I also love to explore the great outdoors, so if you're inspired by the Olympics and want to start jogging, I'd be happy to be your running buddy! After we go for walkies, we can both be couch potatoes– it would be great to watch the Olympic games with you and cheer on athletes from the home of the brave from the comfort of my own forever home!

Screen Shot 2016-07-24 at 1.04.21 PMAn 18-month-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier/Boxer who is certain to win the admiration of everyone she meets with her goofy grin and pooch smooches, Dottie has been waiting a long time for a special someone to love. Currently living in a kennel, she is hoping that a foster family will welcome her into their home until she finds her forever family. As smart as she is sweet, food-motivated Dottie has learned the commands for 'sit' and 'stay', and is currently working on loose leash training. Dottie has lived with other dogs, but would like to be the only dog in the house until she has become accustomed to her new environment.

Meet Dottie with @Lulusrescue4dog who's looking for a foster or forever family!

Spayed, heartworm negative and up to date on her vaccinations, Dottie is just one of the many dogs and puppies who are one step closer to finding a forever family to love thanks to Lulu's Rescue. Located in Point Pleasant, Pennsylvania, the primarily volunteer-operated rescue organization has saved the lives of close to 2,000 dogs in the past six years.

Recipe: Mango Sorbet for You AND Your Dog!

mango-Depositphotos_57025581_original

mango-Depositphotos_57025581_original

Today we have a fun that you AND your dog can share…and one that's perfect for the hot, hot weather that so many regions are tolerating right now.

Our mango sorbet is a yummy dairy-free dessert makes a great ice cream, even if you or your dog is lactose intolerant. Don't like mango? You might not have tried the right type of mango; there are over 400 varieties! Once on a tour of a mango plantation in St. Lucia, I remember that our guide said you can never say you don't like mangoes…only that you don't like THAT kind of mango!

The national fruit of India, the mango has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine and, although there are many varieties of mangoes, all pack a powerful nutritional punch. Fat free, sodium free and cholesterol free, the fruit contains over 20 different vitamins and minerals.

Lactose-intolerant dogs (or people) will find almond milk an easy substitute. Homemade almond milk, made from ground nuts and water (the most Paleo-friendly choice) or a commercial version can be used as a milk substitute, having a creamy texture and somewhat nutty taste.

Mango Sorbet for You AND Your Dog

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe mangoes, peeled
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • ½ cup unsweetened almond milk

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to blender and puree.
  2. Pour mixture into a shallow silicone baking tray or in a silicone ice cube tray. Freeze overnight.

Fido + Fluffy's #FreebieFriday Goes Daytripping

john-tiki-car

john-tiki-car

As you know, we love to daytrip with dogs. Three of our guidebooks cover day trips (around Austin, San Antonio and Houston) and we like nothing better than to hop in the car with Irie and Tiki and go exploring.

With this month's heat wave, our day trips have been really close to home as we explore some local parks during the early mornings. The small parks may not be exciting locales–but Irie and Tiki don't care. They just love exploring the new sights and smells, following in the paw-steps of other canine visitors. They love to see a trail, inviting exploration.

As always, Irie and Tiki are a great reminder to me to enjoy whatever it is we're doing, no matter how big or little.

I also hope you'll enjoy entering some giveaways, ones we've rounded up in our weekly Fido + Fluffy's Freebie Friday blog hop which we co-host with To Dog With Love and CatTipper! 12 Ways to Keep Your Dog Cool

irie-drinking-looking-camer

irie-drinking-looking-camer

With a heat wave sweeping across the country, we thought it was a good time to go over some easy tips for keeping your dog safe and comfortable during the hot summer. This is a topic about which we have plenty of experience…here's our local forecast:

Screen Shot 2016-07-20 at 1.31.11 PM

Stay indoors

Irie and Tiki hang out indoors by the AC vents on these hot summer days. They like to stay outside an extra half hour after the morning walk but, other than that, they're only outside for a quick potty run.

Make a cool place to lie outdoors

It's better for your dogs to be indoors in the heat but if your dogs are going to be outside for a few hours, make sure they have a cool place to lie. Water down the porch and wet an area in the shaded portion of the yard to keep them cool.

Walk early

On these hot days, we get up extra early to take our dog walk and do any outdoor chores that need to be done for the day.

Walk late

Our evening walk is taken as late as possible. I don't like walking after dark (there are no streetlights in the country!) so I take this walk around sundown.

Make your morning walk your longest walk

Even though I wait for sunset, evenings are toasty here, often staying close to 100 degrees. To make it worse, the ground is hot from the day's sunshine so that heat is radiating up and onto the dogs, who are much closer to the ground than we are. Because of this, the evening walk is a short one.

Go slowly

Be sure to make those walks slow ones; now's not the time to start that fitness program with Fido. Be sure to pay special attention to brachycephalic dogs like pugs or bulldogs who have a difficult time cooling off in the heat due to their shortened muzzle.

Groom

Be sure to keep your dog brushed during the heat; mats really hold extra body heat. Tiki gets a summer haircut and we keep both dogs brushed to remove any loose fur. Tiki also gets a “tummy tunnel” haircut on her belly with almost all hair cut as short as possible, helping her to cool off on our hardwood floors.

Stay off the pavement

The pavement - whether asphalt or concrete - is a griddle during hot weather; it will burn and blister your dog's paws. Wear booties if your dog walks on pavement, and try to keep your dog on grass or dirt as much as possible. If it's too hot for you to walk on in your bare feet, it's too hot for your dog's paws!

Never leave your dog in the car

Never. Ever. Think you'll leave the AC running while you run in for that quick errand? If your engine fails, your dog will die. Please, just leave your dog at home.

Stay hydrated

Carry water on your walks and make sure your dog always has a big supply of fresh, cool water at home, too. If you're concerned that your dog isn't drinking enough, make that water more tempting by adding ice cubes, bits of chicken breast, or a frozen treat.

Enjoy frozen treats

It's quick and easy to make frozen dog treats (you'll find both sweet and savory ones in our Recipe index).

Go for a swim

Irie and Tiki's favorite way to stay cool is definitely with a swim. This year we've been very lucky to have water in the creek (although water levels are dropping by the day).

Summer is a great time for fun with your dog but heatstroke is a real risk to you both. Plan your day, take it slowly, and make sure the memories you create this season are good ones!

Anthony Head Celebrates 20th Year of Dog Rescue

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 5.40.56 PM

Actor Anthony Head, who has brought such diverse characters as Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and King Uther Pendragon in Merlin to life on the small screen, recently helped to celebrate the 20th anniversary of a dog rescue organization that offers a new lease on life to greyhounds and lurchers.

Stepping into his longtime role as Honorary Friend of Greyhound Rescue of Western England, the star (who will soon be seen in cinemas in the true tale of A Street Cat Named Bob) and his wife Sarah Fisher welcomed rescue volunteers, adoptables and dogs who have found forever families to love thanks to the non-profit charity on to the grounds of their Tilley Farm home for the charity's birthday party.

As birthdays are a time of both reflection and new beginnings, the charity (which is the leading greyhound rescue charity in England and Wales) chose the day to officially unveil its new name. Now to be known as Forever Hounds Trust, the non-profit will continue its mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome sighthounds of all ages. Each year approximately 500 dogs who find themselves in need of homes after being sent to a shelter or relinquished by a guardian or trainer, are united with loving pet parents thanks to the organization.

Along with being a friend to Forever Hounds Trust, Anthony Head's real life role as an animal advocate has also lead him to show his support for other animal welfare charities. Over the years the actor has used his star wattage to shine a spotlight on Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Dog Rescue Federation, Dogs Trust, Senior Staffy Club, Wood Green Animal Charity, Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary and Cats Protection, as well as a number of organizations which care for our other friends with fur, among them Secret World Wildlife Rescue and Animals Asia.

Anthony Head recently starred in a PSA to explain the compassionate work of Forever Hounds Trust:

Our Grain-Free Journey–for Ourselves AND Our Dogs

tiki-nutrish1

nutrish-irie-tiki-cover

Rachael Ray Nutrish has sponsored this post, but all opinions are my own.

John and I have been on a low carb diet for many years, working hard to avoid grains as much as possible in our meals. We feel better, our clothes fit better, and I think we have more energy when we stay away from carbohydrates as much as possible.

It's not always easy, especially when we go to restaurants (tortillas…I see you looking at me…) but even at home it's sometimes challenging to avoid bread products. I don't buy any bread but I know that sometimes it would be so good to have something as simple as a grilled cheese sandwich.

Recently I found out about Cloud Bread, a recipe that's been all the rage on the Internet. Earlier this year, The Huffington Post reported that pins and repins of this popular recipe–and all its many variations–were up 76 percent this year.

cloud-bread

I had to give it a try…and I was amazed with the results. Consisting primarily of cream cheese and eggs, the “bread” satisfied my hunger for real bread without loading me down with carbs. Although tasty right out of the oven, after overnight refrigeration, the Cloud Bread developed more of a chewy, bread-like texture and it was also easier to top to create a sandwich. Here's the basic recipe that I used:

Cloud Bread

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar or baking powder
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. (I used one baking sheet and one muffin pan, greased.)
  2. Separate the eggs, careful to not get any egg yolk in the egg white. Set the egg yolks aside.
  3. Add the cream of tartar or baking powder to the egg whites and use a beater to mix completely until stiff peaks form.
  4. In a separate bowl, add the honey and cream cheese to the egg yolks. Mix with the beater until completely mixed.
  5. Slowly fold in the egg whites, careful to not deflate the mixture. Use a spoon to stir completely.
  6. Pour bun-sized circles of the mixture on the baking sheets. Bake until golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before refrigerating.
  7. Refrigerate in a zippered plastic bag or airtight container.
http://www.dogtipper.com/products/2016/07/our-grain-free-journey-for-ourselves-and-our-dogs.html

Irie and Tiki, of course, had to sample the Cloud Bread, too, and gave it a paws up!

I feel good about giving them Cloud Bread because it's close to the grain-free diet that they enjoy on a daily basis. After all, a dog's natural diet is low in grain (which also makes it allergy-friendly for many dogs).

irie-food-closeup

Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Zero Grain foods are made without grains, glutens or fillers. Tiki and Irie love the Turkey & Potato as well as the Salmon & Sweet Potato recipes but their favorite is Rachael Ray Nutrish® Zero Grain Beef, Potato & Bison Recipe. It's made–in the USA–with beef (the number one ingredient), wholesome vegetables and the vitamins and minerals that I know they need to receive for a complete and balanced diet. The meat is sourced from cattle and bison raised on U.S. farms. As with all Nutrish foods, it contains NO poultry by-product meal, and no artificial preservatives, colors or artificial flavors.

I also love that Rachael Ray's personal proceeds go to Rachael's Rescue, which was created to help shelter pets in need. In 2007, with help from pet nutrition experts, Rachael Ray created Nutrish super-premium food and treats for dogs inspired by recipes from her own kitchen–then, in 2014, the line added premium cat foods. In that time, Rachael Ray has donated over $14 million to provide food, medical supplies and treatments for homeless pets!

Clear the Shelters Adoption Drive July 23

In the U.S. July is traditionally the warmest month in the calendar year, and one Saturday this July may just go down in the record books as the most warm-hearted day of the year as thousands of dogs and cats from coast to coast find forever families to love during the Clear the Shelters pet adoption drive.

cts_logo_en46g1In partnership with NBC owned TV stations and the Telemundo Station Group, on July 23, 2016 over 400 animal shelters in 20 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico will take part in the initiative, which features low-cost and fee-waived pet adoptions.

Celebrating its second year in 2016, all involved hope to meet or surpass the success of the initial event, which saw a total of 19,685 of our tail-wagging chums find loving homes.

How to Adopt on Clear the Shelters Day

Potential pet parents can find a participating shelter in their area on a Clear the Shelters' online map. Simply click on the dots which indicate the location of a shelter that is taking part in the event to find out that facility's address, phone number, hours of operation and website address.

As added treats, you can also follow the number of pets who find homes on the day in real time thanks to a counter on the Clear the Shelters' website.

Also on July 29th, celebrate the adoption of thousands of homeless dogs and cats by tuning in to a half-hour adoption drive wrap up special presented by soon-to-be host of Access Hollywood, Natalie Morales of TODAY fame. To find out when the program will air in your area, check your local listings.

Fido + Fluffy's #FreebieFriday Heads to the Lake

Well, there's no doubt that we're now smack dab in the middle of summer…temperatures have hit 100 degrees and continue to soar to that level every day. With a heat index pushing 108 degrees, we've been spending a lot of time enjoying our air-conditioning…but finally decided it was time to break away and cool off the old-fashioned way with a trip to the lake.

Our favorite local lake is Inks Lake, where a very dog-friendly state park makes Irie and Tiki's short list of favorite Texas getaways. While Irie and Tiki aren't kayakers like the dog we saw loving his time on the water, they like nothing better than wading in the granite-lined shallows…

…and watching the Canada Geese that winter here…but this flock seemed to decide that it would make a good summer home, too…
