2016 is an election year and talk of 'elephants' and 'donkeys' currently dominates the news. While the public will have to wait until November to vote for their preferred political animal, animal lovers can cast their ballot now for their favorite Fidos in American Humane Association's Hero Dog Awards.
Now in its sixth year, 174 stout-hearted Spots are presently in the running for coveted spots in eight categories:
- Law Enforcement Dogs
- Military Dogs
- Arson Dogs
- Therapy Dogs
- Service Dogs
- Emerging Hero Dogs
- Search and Rescue Dogs
- Guide/Hearing Dogs
Through April 27th, fans of Fidos can vote for their favorite dogs once a day at www.herodogawards.org. A total of 24 nominees will be selected as semi-finalists, with three courageous canines representing each category. Both the public and high-profile pals to those with paws will narrow the list down to one dog per category in a second round of voting.
The top dogs chosen for each category will have the chance to lap up the limelight when they are flown to Los Angeles, where they will hear the applause of A-list celebrities celebrating the dogs' heroic deeds during a red carpet presentation on September 10th. Animal lovers can be virtual guests at the gala when The Hallmark Channel airs the awards during a two-hour presentation in the fall.
The victor in each category will receive a $2,500 donation for their designated charity partner, which the winner of the event's top honor (American Hero Dog) earning an additional $5,000 prize for his favorite paws cause.
The 2016 voting process is dedicated to the memory of Harley, who passed away in March. The recipient of the title of American Hero Dog in 2015, Harley– a one-eyed Chihuahua who suffered a decade of horror in a puppy mill– helped to shine a light on the plight of other dogs in the same heartbreaking situation after his rescue and adoption.
