#PawPromise Adoptable Dog of the Week: Mr. Ruffles

Mr. Ruffles

Mr. Ruffles

Hi! I'm Mr. Ruffles, and I'm in training for the summer Olympic games. I think that I'm a shoo-in to win a gold medal in happy dancing and playing tug of war, and together we could probably win a bronze in the sport of fetch…I like to collect my toys when they are tossed, but since I haven't quite grasped the concept of retrieving a ball that might keep us from getting the top spot on the podium. If we work hard we might even have a shot at getting on the Olympic dog walking team! I love to go for walkies in order to keep my nine-pound frame in shape, but I tend to pull on my leash. I just can't help myself…I'm the kind of dog who can't wait to see what's next!

Mr. Ruffles 2Hold on a minute…you say that dog dancing, fetch and dog walking aren't Olympic sports? I guess I may not win a gold medal after all…but I would LOVE to win the heart of a forever pet parent!

A five-year-old Pomeranian/Chihuahua, Mr. Ruffles is housebroken, has been neutered and is up-to-date on his vaccinations. A canine who loves the company of kids and friendly dogs, Mr. Ruffles can be a bit nervous around some men.

Mr. Ruffles is just one of the many dogs, cats, puppies and kittens in the care of People's Anti-Cruelty Association /Albuquerque Animal Rescue. The oldest no-kill rescue organization in the state of New Mexico, since its start in 1973 PACA's network of foster parents have saved and changed the lives of countless companion animals in need.

Fido + Fluffy’s #FreebieFriday Has a Change of Plans

lucky-lights

lucky-lights

This week has been a lot different than we planned! We're on deadline for the Texas Curiosities book revision and still had a handful of photos left to shoot for this assignment. We were packed and ready to head to Galveston with Irie and Tiki for a few days for this last stretch before Sunday's book deadline.

But the afternoon before we left, our cat Lucky began passing blood in his urine. As you know, last year Lucky had bladder surgery so this meant an immediate trip to the veterinarian's office.

Lucky's doing well now and on a painkiller as we wait for an ultrasound–and trip plans were definitely cancelled. Things have been a little quiet here on the blog as we rewrite parts of the book to accommodate the change in photos we'll have available. The book project will be turned in by Sunday, though, then it's back to our usual posting schedule!

fido-fluffy-freebie-fridayIn the meantime, we want to share this week's Fido + Fluffy's Blog Hop that we co-host with To Dog With Love and CatTipper! If you're a blogger with a pet-related giveaway, be sure to link up! Please link directly to your giveaway, not to your home page. (Please don’t link to non-giveaway posts.) We post a new blog hop every Thursday afternoon at 4pm ET.

And we hope everyone will enjoy entering some new giveaways!

Disclaimer: Each giveaway has its own entry rules. DogTipper, To Dog With Love, and CatTipper assume no responsibility for the legality of the rules governing the listings on other sites and giveaways that are posted here. We simply provide this forum as a gathering place for pet product giveaways to be offered. Fulfillment of each giveaway is done by the blog conducting the giveaway, not by the hosts of this giveaway hop; please contact the giveaway host with any questions regarding a giveaway or giveaway prize.

Messy Puppy

Messy Puppy

Confetti

Presented by Puppy Bowl sponsor Bissell, starting at 3 p.m. ET on February 7th fans of Fidos can watch on PetHappens.com as 10 puppies are unleashed in an all-white room. To help the pooches ‘get in the game,' viewers can Tweet or post on Instagram using the hashtag #PetHappens. The posts will unlock a myriad of potential messes for the curious cuties to make. How can any playful pup resist the temptation of a heaping plate of spaghetti with meatballs, toilet paper rolls and a gravy-filled champagne tower?

Gravy Tower Lick

Once every Spot has enjoyed a "Lady and the Tramp" moment with meatballs, every roll of toilet paper has been unfurled and the rowdy Rovers are ready to take a cat nap, Bissell will tackle the space and restore it to pristine condition.

Prince Lorenzo Borghese Promotes Pet Adoption

image009

image009

True love eluded Prince Lorenzo Borghese when he appeared on season nine of the hit ABC series The Bachelor. However, nine years later, the former reality TV star (who today helps to create a better reality for dogs in need as the co-founder of Animal Aid USA) has found a puppy love who has captured his heart.

While 15 four-legged contestants hoped to get their paws on a coveted rose, Titan's fetching personality made him the winner of a tongue in cheek Los Angeles rose ceremony that helps to shine a spotlight on the option of pet adoption.

Titan has found his match, but Los Angeles is still full of dogs who are searching for that special someone to whom they can give all of their devotion. "Adopt, Don't Shop," states Kim Sill the founder of Shelter Hope Pet Shop, a volunteer-based non-profit in Thousand Oaks, California, "There are thousands of homeless animals looking for love, and they are relying on us to adopt them."

"All animals deserve to be loved," says Borghese, an animal advocate who is not only the co-founder of Animal Aid USA, which saves the lives of companion animals who are facing their fate in high-kill shelters through monthly transportation to qualified rescue groups, but also the president of Royal Treatment pet care products. "A dog is a perfect companion, and a true testament to man's best friend."

Fido + Fluffy’s #FreebieFriday Shoots Gift Book Photos

tiki-brushy-creek

tiki-brushy-creek

This has been a busy week! I told you earlier this month that we were busy shooting photos for a revision of a book called Texas Curiosities. This isn't one of our titles; it was written by the humor columnist for the Austin American-Statesman. Our job is to revise the text and shoot photos for the full-color guide…so we've been running around taking a lot of pictures these past few weeks!

That schedule has had to work around January weather. We've been lucky to have had much milder weather than many parts of the country but we need sunny skies for the photos…not always an easy thing in mid-January. Irie and Tiki have been very patient with us, though, as we've stood and waited for the skies to clear before snagging our shot. They've been happy joining us on our trips with more to come over the next two weeks before our deadline.

fido-fluffy-freebie-fridayBut first, though, it's time for another Fido and Fluffy’s Freebie Friday blog hop. This weekly hop shares giveaways for pets and pet lovers. We hope, if you’re a blogger, you’ll consider adding your giveaways to our weekly hop that we co-host with To Dog With Love and CatTipper! Please link directly to your giveaway, not to your home page. (Please don't link to non-giveaway posts.)

We post a new blog hop every Thursday afternoon at 4pm ET.

Good luck!

Ian Somerhalder, Nikki Reed 2016 Mardi Paws Monarchs

Mardi Paws

Mardi Paws
Dog devotees are invited to celebrate puppy love this Valentine's Day with a pair of notable newlyweds as The Vampire Diaries‘ Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed of the Twilight film franchise step into the role of Mardi Paws celebrity monarchs.

The couple will join ‘party animals' and their costume-clad canines as they promenade in a parade for a higher purpose– helping both people and pets in need. The theme for 2016 is "Love is in the Hair," which will focus on famous fictitious and real romantic twosomes who have captured our hearts. The dogs who don disguises can try to win prizes, with the tail-waggers who best interpret this year's theme taking home a prize basket complete with a ‘poop' trophy.

Both of the animal-loving luminaries often use their star wattage to shine a spotlight on paws causes, with Reed testifying at the State Capitol of Sacramento for The Beagle Freedom Bill, which would allow dogs and cats in labs the chance to be adopted once testing has come to an end; stepping in front of the camera for a PSA which called for an end to BSL, and most recently flying across the country to unite a dog she had fostered with his new forever family.

Louisiana native Ian Somerhander, who previously acted as a celebrity monarch of The Mystic Krewe of Mardi Paws parade in 2014, launched the Ian Somerhalder Foundation on his birthday in December 2010. This past year alone the organization distributed more than $110,000 in Emergency Medical Grants for the care of both our domesticated furry friends and those who walk on the wide side; initiated a campaign to help global efforts to end trophy hunting; celebrated ISF's second annual Meatless May campaign; launched the campaign Halfway to Home, which promotes fostering and the option of pet adoption, and much more. Proceeds raised from the 2016 Mardi Paws parade will help to further The Ian Somerhalder Foundation‘s mission. Other organizations benefiting from the event include Scott's Wish, the St. Tammany Spay & Neuter Group and the Miracle League Northshore.

When: February 14, 2016 Parade starts at 2 p.m.

Where: 140 Jackson Avenue in Mandeville, Louisiana

How To Spot an Animal Social Justice Warrior

There's something happening in the animal world, something sticky and kind of ugly, and we need to talk about it.

You learn to spot patterns when you've been around long enough, trends that start in one area but quickly pick up steam in your own neck of the woods. And that, my friends, is what I'm bringing up today: the emerging trend of the Social Justice Warrior, and how that relates to people in pet care.

sjw

I think it's pretty clear that I am a big proponent of animal advocacy, from the first blogathons to my work with hospice and this very site, which I've written for seven years now in an attempt to keep an open dialogue on important pet topics. I am a huge fan of people who work so very hard and selflessly to make a difference, and this is not who I am speaking of today.

I have also seen a less pleasant side of people, those who use their issue of choice as a shield to build up their own ego and bludgeon others, often at the expense of those very people who are trying to improve the world for others, while tarnishing their own cause by association.

What is an animal social justice warrior, exactly?

While the term "social justice warrior" started gaining momentum with the Gamergate brouhaha specifically in reference to progressive views and speech, the prevailing wisdom is that the term has evolved to encompass a wide array of armchair activists who care less about outcomes and more about dogpiles. No one has specifically defined what it means in our sphere, so I'm just going to go ahead and do it right here.

It matters to us, as animal welfare advocates, healthcare providers, and educators, because we're often the ones being targeted. Here's what I've observed, over and over:

  • It starts from a good place.

Most of the time, people start on a course of advocacy for an issue they truly believe in: maybe it's ear cropping, or vaccine safety, or feral cat rescue. Good topics that good people can get behind, which is why it is so hard to call them out. But then something goes sideways.

  • Facts become less important than emotion as time goes on and the ‘army' grows.

As momentum builds with a social justice warrior's campaign, enemies are identified and the followers are called upon to ‘take them down' on social media, which can be annoying for a large pharmaceutical company but devastating for a small business owner or individual. Sometimes it's very hard to dispute the ugliness of the original offense (like the guy who killed Cecil the Lion), but other times the dogpile results in something far worse than the original problem: people losing jobs, people erroneously identified as child predators. By the time the error is identified, the damage has been done.

  • Methods are as important as ideas.

When a social justice warrior really gets going, they often work to recruit others to the cause. Sometimes those people demur, not because they disagree with the original idea, but because the seek and destroy tactics make them uncomfortable. They become the enemy. There is no allowance to exist in parallel.

  • There is no room for discussion.

This is when you know the game is over, so to speak. Are you allowed to point out an erroneous fact? No. Question a topic? No. At this point, the social justice warrior's ego has become more important than the actual topic at hand, and no amount of reasoning will change their mind. In fact, it only makes them dig their heels in more. You've just given them one more ‘enemy' to bounce off of.

What does this mean for you, the pet lovers of the world?

If you're the owner of a small business, rescue, or work with an organization, you may find yourself in the crosshairs for some or other perceived wrong. I'll talk about what does and doesn't seem to help in another post, because it's happening more and more.

How to Spot an Animal Social Justice Warrior

But even you, the general audience out there on the web, has a role to play in this. Before joining a cause or supporting an advocate, ask yourself this:

  • How do they respond to constructive criticism? With acknowledgment, or anger?
  • Do they have a revolving door of bullies who they claim are always trying to silence them? Do they ever talk to someone with an opposing view in a respectful dialogue?
  • How do they encourage action? Do they link to legitimate organizations doing real world work, or is it limited to online petitions, reviews, and Facebook arguments?
  • What emotions are they playing to? When you look at their page, do you feel empowered to make a positive difference, or just angry at the world?

If you think this is about one person, you're wrong. I can't even point to any one in particular because the truth is, there are too many to list. People like this don't help the causes, they hurt them. They make animal advocates look bad, incapable of compromise, cooperation, and nuance. Be aware, and ask yourself what the real goals are before liking, sharing, or sending money. Real advocacy exists, but this isn't it.

We still have lots of work to do, but this isn't the way to do it.

Allison Janney Helps Movement to #SaveThemAll

5245-I Saved-Allison Janney_FB

5245-I Saved-Allison Janney_FB
Over the course of her acting career Allison Janney has won seven Emmy Awards. Now the star of the popular CBS sitcom Mom has won the admiration of dog devotees for raising awareness of companion animals in U.S. shelters who want human fathers and mothers to love.

An A-list animal advocate, Janney cherishes her real life role as a pet parent to her rescue dogs, Addie, Sippie and Dutch. Her barking buddy Addie recently had the chance to star alongside her famous Mom in Best Friends Animal Society's ‘I Saved My Best Friend' campaign. Other stars who have helped the renowned non-profit organization shine a spotlight the option of pet adoption and putting an end to the problem of pet overpopulation through spaying/neutering include actress Amanda Seyfried, Shameless star Emmy Rossum, Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba and Under the Dome cast member Rachelle Lefevre.

"The work that Best Friends has done for the far too many animals in need has been noting short of amazing," the star stated. "Through their strategy, coordination and outreach I believe we will see a day when we can save animals from senseless deaths in overcrowded shelters. Please remember to adopt, don't shop. And if you're not able to bring an animal permanently into your home, please consider fostering or volunteering. Your life will be better for it."

Founded in 1984, Best Friends Animal Society has played a vital role in reducing the number of animals who lose their lives in U.S. shelters each year from 17 million to an estimated four million. Operating the largest no-kill sanctuary in the country, Best Friends– which has adoption centers and spay/neuter facilities in both Salt Lake City, Utah and Los Angeles, California– has also partnered with over 1,300 rescue groups and shelters from coast to coast to further Best Friends' no-kill movement and help #SaveThemAll.

#PawPromise Adoptable Dog of the Week: Gailen

Gailen

Gailen
A dog who certainly lives up to his name (which is a Basque word meaning ‘excellent' or ‘superb'), Gailen would be an excellent buddy for a pet parent! A happy-go-lucky guy who has made friends with many of the dogs he's met, Gailen– who is less than two years old– is believed to be an American Bulldog/Pointer.

Although Gailen suffered from intestinal problems and itchy skin when he was pulled from an animal shelter, today he sports a shiny coat and his tummy trouble is only periodic. Thought to be caused by a combination of allergies, improper nutritional care in his past and the stress of shelter life, Gailen has undergone several tests to determine the source of the problem. He is presently on a low dosage of Prednisone, which has helped to alleviate the issue.

Already neutered, up-to-date on his vaccinations, tested for heart worms and microchipped, Gailen is just one of the many dogs, cats, puppies and kittens who are one step closer to finding a forever family to love thanks to The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, located in Kansas City, Kansas. Established in 1912, the facility has been a no-kill shelter since 1994. Along with finding homes of adoptables, the non-profit organization also offers preventative veterinary care at its clinic, and in 2014 alone spayed and neutered over 3,000 companion animals in need. Humane education programs which pass on a passion for of compassion to the next generation are also available.
