tiki-2015-glasses

tiki-2015-glasses

Just a few hours remaining in 2015 as the countdown is on to 2016!

Tonight we’ll be watching TV (there’s a marathon of The Profit!), and turning up the volume to drown out any sounds of fireworks. Irie hates (hates, hates!) fireworks so the holiday is always a mixed blessing, as I know it is for many of you. If you need tips on helping keep your dog calm during fireworks, you’ll find numerous archived posts about fireworks here on DogTipper.

fff-300As we ring in 2016, we’ll have several new features and special events to bring you in the coming weeks. (Psst…watch for details on a new Event Barkers Twitter party coming up soon!) It’s always exciting to roll out new features and reorganize our growing number of sites.

In the meantime, we want to wish everyone a happy, safe New Year’s as we kick off 2015’s final Fido’s Freebie Friday, which we co-host with ToDogwithLove.com and AllThingsDogBlog.com. And, as always, if you are a blogger with a pet-themed giveaway, please be sure to add it below.

2015 in Review: In Memoriam

Uggie

Uggie

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2015, DogTipper takes a look back at some of the high-profile pals to those with paws who we said farewell to this year. Forever with us thanks to the songs and screen images which they have left behind, the memory of their compassion for dogs and cats will live on in the hearts of animal lovers.

Country music star Lynn Anderson, who climbed to the top of the charts with her hit single (“I Never Promised You) A Rose Garden,” is fondly remembered for cultivating a better tomorrow for our four-legged friends in need. In life the singer lent her voice to a Stop Animal Cruelty initiative to place harsher penalties on abusers of dogs, cats and horses in the state of North Dakota, and her passing was marked with a request for donations to two of her favorite organizations– Stray Hearts Animal Shelter in Taos, New Mexico and Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue in Nashville, a non-profit which she frequently helped as a foster.

Lynn Anderson with Waylon, one of the many dogs from Proverbs 12:10 Animal rescue which she fostered as they waited for a forever pet parent:

Gone too soon, 22-year-old reality personality Linsey “Jade” Berardi (who starred in season 12 of the Oxygen network series Bad Girls Club) wanted to create a better reality for our furry friends during her lifetime. To honor her commitment to paws causes her family requested donations to animal shelters in lieu of flowers.

Thanks to actor James Best, (who fans will remember as Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane on The Dukes of Hazzard), a basset hound in a pound had the chance to make the leap from shelter to stardom. A friend to all Fidos, the actor rescued the rover and convinced producers to give the dog the role of the Sheriff’s canine companion, Flash. Always ready with a treat for any four-legged fan he would meet, when he passed away his family requested donations to local humane societies in lieu of flowers.

A member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Wayne Carson wrote or co-wrote such iconic tunes as “Always on My Mind,” “The Letter” and “She’s Acting Single (I’m Drinking Doubles.)” When the talented songsmith passed on in July his request for donations to Southern Cross Boston Terrier Rescue to help write a new chapter in the lives of dogs in need.

“Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough.” This quote from Peter Pan could describe the life of actor and choreographer Roland Dupree, who gained fame as the live action model for The Boy Who Never Grew Up in the Disney animated classic. An actor who starred alongside such Hollywood heavyweights as Jimmy Stewart, Bing Crosby and Donald O’Connor, Dupree would go on to teach dance moves to Juliet Prowse, Olympian Peggy Fleming and the dance double for Jennifer Beals in Flashdance. When he wasn’t in the dance studio, the joy that his adopted dogs would bring to his life had Dupree dancing on a cloud. When he passed away in June donations were requested for the rescue that had once cared for his barking buddies, Watermelon Mountain Ranch in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

As Officer Pete Malloy he kept the streets of L.A. safe on the long-running series Adam-12, and in real life actor Martin Milner helped to keep homeless dogs and cats safe. Over the years the TV star acted as a volunteer at many of the San Diego Humane Society‘s adoption events, and in 1989 he and his four-pawed pal Pearl (a Shih Tzu) played a role in raising funds for the non-profit at the organization’s Fur Ball.

As a co-creator of The Simpsons he made us laugh, and as a creator of a better tomorrow for both people and pets Sam Simon brought tears of joy to our eyes. The founder of The Sam Simon Foundation, as he faced his final battle Simon thought not of himself, but rather of those who needed his help, and when he passed away he left a large portion of his fortune to a variety of charities.

The following tribute video was shown during a recent Last Chance for Animals gala:

An English Bulldog who held a Guinness World Record, Tillman also held a top spot in the heart of dog devotees. The skilled skateboarder and surfer often entertained crowds at pet adoption events and Bark in the Park baseball games which raised funds for rescue organizations.

Shortly after his passing, two-and four-legged fans gathered to remember Tillman, as seen in this report from CBS Los Angeles:

A talented tail-wagger whose charm helped the silent screen homage The Artist win a coveted golden statue, Uggie was a canine with a heart of gold. Over the years the Jack Russell Terrier rode with adoptables from L.A. Animal Services on a Beverly Hills Pet Care Foundation float in the Rose Parade; pitched the option of pet adoption at the San Diego Padres’ Dog Days of Summer game; and even the Chopard bow tie that the celebrity Spot donned for his appearance at the Academy Awards benefited dogs and cats in the care of The Amanda Foundation. The famous Fido also happily took on a supporting role when he attended a presentation honoring the Mayo Clinic’s Caring Canines, and when he acted as a spokesdog for The Humane Society of the United States’ Pets of Valor Award.

84th Academy Awards

As the patriarch of the Bradford brood he provided TV viewers with sustenance for the soul each week on the classic TV dramedy Eight is Enough, and in real life actor Dick Van Patten provided sustenance for the family dog and cat. The co-founder of Natural Balance pet food, Van Patten launched National Guide Dog Month to raise awareness and funds for American organizations which support or train service dogs.

2015 in Review: Royals to the Rescue

Queen

QueenAs we get ready to embark on a new year, DogTipper takes a look back at royals around the world who know that dogs rule! From shining a spotlight on animal rescue organizations to the noble work of service dogs, here are a few of the Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses who showed their dogged devotion to paws causes in 2015:

1) A sovereign with a soft spot for Spots, Queen Elizabeth II took on the role of Royal Patron of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home back in 1956. Earlier this year the monarch and Prince Philip paid a visit to the renowned charity’s London headquarters to officially open the organization’s crowning achievement of 2015– the Mary Tealby Kennels. Named in honor of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home’s founder, the state-of-the-art facility includes under-floor heating, outdoor exercise pens, an external run area complete with climbing mounds and plants, and built-in speakers which play mellow music to make the scene serene for the Rovers in residence.

2) For Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall HRH stands not only for Her Royal Highness, but also Her Royal Helper. A pet parent to two rescue dogs (Beth and Bluebell) from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, the wife of Prince Charles showed her support for a number of animal welfare charities in 2015:

  • A royal tour of New Zealand led to a stop at the Wellington SPCA, where the Duchess was greeted by a dog guard of honor. During her visit Camilla met many of the canines who are receiving a new lease on life thanks to the charity, including a three-legged mixed breed dog who took part in a demonstration of the facility’s dog wash, and a puppy who was rescued from a glass recycling bin. Before leaving for the next stop on the royal tour, the Duchess added a leaf on the organization’s Tree of Remembrance in loving memory of one of her late four-legged friends, Freddie.
  • The same year that she took on the title of HRH Camilla also took on the role of patron of Animal Care Trust, the Royal Veterinary College’s registered charity. In March 2015 the Duchess paid a visit to the Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital at the Royal Veterinary College to tour the teaching hospital’s anatomy museum, find out how funds from Animal Care Trust have led to the purchase of laparoscopic surgical equipment for neutering procedures, and visit with some of the facility’s furry patients.
  • By catching a wristband tossed into the royal box by Andy Murray after a match at Wimbledon the Duchess of Cornwall grasped an opportunity to help companion animals in need. After the sports star autographed the item, the royal put the wristband up for auction on Ebay, where it raised several thousand pounds for the Royal Veterinary College Animal Care Trust– an organization selected by Murray among the 500 charities supported by the Duchess.
  • Giving foodies a taste of the good life for a good cause, proceeds from the sale of the Rover-loving royal’s limited edition honey pots (made from bees that buzz in her private garden) at London’s Fortnum & Mason benefited Medical Detection Dogs. Since 2014 Camilla has been a patron of the registered charity, which frequently turns to dogs who need forever homes when looking for canines to train for the challenging work of identifying volatile substances associated with cancer cells and detecting odor changes which accompany certain medical crises.

3) Parents not only to royal tots George and Charlotte but also to regal rover Lupo, when Prince William and Kate, The Duchess of Cambridge helped to man the phones during ICAP Charity Day the pair took pledges for a wide variety of non-profit organizations, among them Fundacion Razas Unicas. Located in Tiquisa, Columbia, since 2013 the organization has rescued, rehabilitated, vaccinated, sterilized and found forever homes for dogs and cats in need.

4) Prince Harry showed the world that he’s a prince of hearts when he spent the summer in Africa helping endangered wildlife. During his stay he also had the opportunity to learn about the vital work of anti-poaching dogs as he visited Southern African Wildlife College.

5) Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has had a long relationship with Rover-loving royals. Not only was Queen Victoria the charity’s first Royal Patron and Queen Elizabeth II the latest to hold the title, Prince Michael of Kent has been the organization’s President since 1984. In July the Queen’s cousin was greeted with a doggy Guard of Honor when he arrived for a tour of the organization’s South London facility. During his stay the Prince met adoptables at the site’s cattery and checked out the clinic and the new Mary Tealby kennels, which had been officially declared open by the Queen earlier in the year.

Prince Michael of Kent and Claire Horton

6) A proud pet parent to Labrador Retrievers Skipper and Nala, Dutch King Willem-Alexander had the opportunity to meet some of the Labs and Golden Retrievers at the Royal Dutch Guide Dog Foundation who help the visually impaired through their role as service dogs. During his visit to The Netherlands’ largest and oldest guide dog school, the King also embarked on a virtual reality experience to get a better understanding of the difficulties faced by those who cannot rely upon their sight, and how service dogs offer independence for the visually impaired.

7) The silver anniversary of the Madrid-based organization the Perro Guia ONCE Foundation offered Queen Sofia of Spain a golden opportunity to meet future guide dogs who are in training to aid the visually impaired.

8) Offering pets the chance to feel like the king or queen of their castle while helping homeless animals live happily ever after, Princess Maja von Hohenzollern has created Trixie’s Love & Respect collection of posh pet products, the proceeds of which aids animal rescue. An animal advocate who counts 13 rescue dogs, four cats and several rabbits and hamsters as members of her fur family, Her Royal Highness shares the spotlight with a few of her four-legged friends in the following video for her pet product line. Although the words you will hear will be spoken in German, the visuals are a universal language of love for animals:

9) Fans of reality TV remember him as The Bachelor on season nine of the ABC series, but fans of Fidos know Prince Lorenzo Borghese for helping to create a better reality for dogs in need. Decked out in a tuxedo when he acted as host of pet welfare and adoption organization Bideawee‘s Parisian Ball fundraiser (see photo below), the prince wore his heart on his sleeve when he took part in an Animal Aid USA mission to rescue 200 dogs who were facing their fate in a kill shelter in rural Georgia.

Fwd_ MEDIA ALERT- Bideawee's 2015 Parisian Ball-5

10) The following royals may not be real, but their message certainly is! Drawing attention to the option of pet adoption, animated Disney Princesses Ariel, Belle, Cinderella and Tiana and Palace Pets Pumpkin, Lily, Teacup and Treasure joined with The Shelter Pet Project for a PSA to help all dogs and cats live happily ever after in a forever home.

Life is a macaron

My mother was not a great cook. I think she would happily cop to that. She made spaghetti, burnt steak, and stuck underseasoned chicken breasts in the oven until they turned rubbery. Her mother was not a great cook either. She was Irish, so I guess that was part of her legacy to boil everything until it fell apart and all the taste seeped out, or so she claimed.

However, her father was French, so she inherited a different type of culinary genius: boy could she bake. If I had to choose one of the two to excel in, it’s pastry chef every time. Banana bread. Cranberry muffins. Christmas sugar cookies with just the right frosting:cookie ratio. And her New England birthright, the whoopie pie.

Whoopiepies1

Every Christmas, she would bake piles of these little crack blobs and send them to every corner of the States, where otherwise mild-mannered humans would turn into ravenous wolves and tear into them until nothing was left but a small pile of chocolate crumbs and the satisfied groans of bellies bloated with marshmallow creme. And when my kids were older, they took my place up at the counter to learn the great tradition of cookie decorating:

Christmas2013 29 12 2013

They weren’t bakery perfect, but that’s what made them fun.

Mom would also on occasion bake macaroons, those pasty, blobby coconut things that stick to your teeth and cling to the insides of your esophagus like phlegm. I was not a fan. But one fateful day I wandered into a French bakery and admired the little pastel rows of goodness and light known as French macarons, and everything changed. I picked up a rose flavored one and a lavender one, and I was hooked.

Before they became wildly popular a year or two ago, they were nearly impossible to find, and I decided that the easiest thing to do would be just to learn how to make them myself. Mom was on board too, ready to add a new treat to her repertoire.

Unfortunately, macarons are known as one of the granddaddies of pastry making, a confection as temperamental as an 80s hair band vocalist. Beat the meringue too long? Ruined. Not long enough? Ruined. Also able to ruin them: temperature too high, too low, overmixing, undermixing, high humidity, Mercury in retrograde, wrong rack in oven, playing country music while baking, etc, etc.

It only made me more determined to unlock their secrets, so last year I procured a cookbook, 5 bags of almond flour, and spent an afternoon in the kitchen with my mother ruining macarons.

After 3 or so batches, we were able to get a cookie sheet out of the oven with at least half of them edible, and we considered this a great success.

“Next year,” she said, “We’ll have this down.”

We never did get to practice together after that.

So a couple of weeks ago, with this echoing in my mind, I realized I needed to finish what we started and make some damn macarons. They are not like making a batch of chocolate chip cookies where you screw it up a little, meh, still fine.

Macarons are an event. You need to prepare. You need to think about things. You need to time everything just so, knowing the difference between firm meringue and soft, how many folds it takes before the stiff batter melts into pipable lava, make sure to bang the tray on the counter a few times,  you need to rest the cookie before you bake it so you get those little crusty feet. Getting it right is like finding the keyhole into the Misty Mountain, a perfect meeting of all the right tiny details.

And even when you do all of this right, they still get messed up. Sometimes they slant to the left like a manhole askew, sometimes the foot sticks to the pan and all you get is the top half, or they’re overdone and crunchy all the way through. Piles wind up in the trash. And every once in a while you hit the jackpot and get a perfectly done shell, and then- then, it’s magic. Crunchy and chewy and delicate and unlike any other thing out there, and you think to yourself, I have reached nirvana.

Manic Pixie Baker

I went into manic baking mode this week. Between the 3 dozen macarons I took to a cookie exchange (and lost the contest to a BROWNIE, what the heck is that about?), the teacher gifts, the ones my husband wants to bring into work, I can’t keep them in the fridge before they get carted out. Biscoff gingerbread. Pistachio. Cherry cordial. Eggnog. Nutella. I was a macaron machine.

I could have just gone and bought them, I suppose, or picked one of any thousands of easier cookies to make. But there is something special about giving someone a perfectly tied teensy box of macarons that makes a recipient light up- even when the cookies are imperfect, which most of them are. Because you are basically presenting a box that says, “I wasted 40 hours of my life swearing at a bowl of egg whites in order to bring you this,” and when the person squees in delight, you realize it’s not a waste after all.

In the hours I spent in meditative contemplation over a tray of almond meal, it really started to sink in as to why I felt such a need to get it right, to fulfill this promise to my mom that I would nail this cookie in a manner befitting my birthright. Whether or not they came out perfectly was completely beside the point, an added bonus but not necessary.

They are, simply put, a confectionary metaphor for life itself. They’re never going to be perfect. There’s always going to be one more way you can make them better. It takes time and effort and patience to get to the end and it still may not be what you wanted, but oh, even then, it was worth it.

macaron

What you bring to the party, and what you give to others from your own heart and hands- it is worth it. Never stop giving.

Win a Case of Solid Gold Green Cow Green Beef Tripe!

green-tripe

green-tripe

Let’s talk about tripe.

You might be familiar with tripe from your grocery meat market. The cow stomach lining (although tripe can also refer to sheep, pig, goat, and deer stomachs) is sold in commercial grocery stores—but it has been washed and bleached and isn’t nutritional. (You’ll see that the tripe in the grocery store is sparkling white; it’s used to make menudo.)

Green tripe, rich with nutrients from the cow’s diet, is made from the lining of the cow’s fourth stomach, the abomasum, and is filled with partially digested plant matter, as well as naturally occurring gastric juices and healthy digestive enzymes. Green tripe isn’t sold by butchers but many pet parents feeding a raw diet will purchase frozen or dehydrated green tripe from commercial vendors.

15-green-cow-1But there’s another, super easy option that we just tried with Irie and Tiki: Solid Gold® Green Cow™ Green Beef Tripe in Beef Broth. This canned tripe can be served as a meal or as a great way to encourage a reluctant eater.

We know that you’re already familiar with Solid Gold holistic pet foods. Like Solid Gold foods, Green Cow is created with balanced recipes. In the words of Solid Gold:
